Bad Craft Bourbon
Craft Bourbon Distilleries are popping up left and right and it’s just a matter of time until they ruin bourbon for everyone. That’s right, I said it.
Craft Bourbon will be the death of the bourbon industry.
Drop into almost any liquor store and the bourbon whiskey shelf is slap full of brands that didn’t exist 5 years ago. Cool names, cool bottles, bad bourbon. In hopes of cashing in on the modern day gold rush, craft bourbon distilleries are cutting corners and putting bourbon into bottles way too soon. Another SKU and another bottle that “tastes just like pappy.”
If I had a penny for every time I had a liquor store owner try to push a subpar craft bourbon on me, I would turn into Kramer in the Seinfeld episode “The Calzone.”
How many people across the country fall for the scam every day? People who are brand new to bourbon who would otherwise love the good stuff, who would love the community, end up getting turned off by bad bottles? Eventually people will stop gambling with their purchases and they’ll stop buying brands they’re not familiar with.
I know what you’re thinking… “More for me!” And for a short period, you’re right – but not for long. Liquor store owners will have thousands upon thousands of dollars worth of crappy bottles on their shelves that won’t sell. They still have to make a living, and if they aren’t making enough money on the bad bottles, what do you think is going to happen?
They will continue to raise the prices of the bottles that we know and love, the good bourbon.
Craft Bourbon will ruin bourbon for everyone if we don’t keep it in check. Of course I’m not saying all craft bourbon is bad, but if a Craft Bourbon Distillery has no intentions of aging their bourbon past the mandatory minimum, don’t buy it.
What Craft Bourbon should we all stay away from?
